The Hook...

And the Catch!

To design a logo for MOTE Marine Laboratory & Aquarium's new expansion, MOTE Science Education Aquarium! Primarily focusing on research, education, conservation and outreach.

It should bring attention to MOTE's mission of education whilst still retaining the authority of  a marine research center; this will then be used as a jumping off point for a new identity system.

Creating a modern take on what is already there for the Mote Aquarium; enhancing something and having it aimed towards both younger and older generations, so everyone can enjoy!

Also something with strong shape language to be applicable to numerous instances.

Concept & Inspiration

The inspiration for this logo redesign is based off (surprise, surprise) the numerous sea creatures found within the aquarium!

Their inquisitive nature reflects the brand image well, and a more abstract approach to this design was perfect to allow it to be used both for educational/public purposes as well as more research and academic-based purposes.

I found that the fish silhouette was the most recognizable, so I stuck with that as I was going to abstractify it!

Colour!

When picking out colours for this design, it felt natural to pull colours from the environment of the building itself - being inspired by the vibrant tones from corals waving under the ultraviolet lights.

A bright complementary colour scheme lends itself to a more modern and unique take on the typical aquarium branding. The mix of cool and warm tones feels a little more organic and lively, playing more into the educational aspect that is open to the public.

Typography

The typeface used is a semibold sans serif named ‘oook’, aiming to show a professional side to the facilities while retaining a sense of easiness for the public.
